Meditation: From nothing to 30 mins a day. How, why and mistakes I made.

Now as much as I don’t wanna make this out to be some big pea-brained love story, it kind of is.

So let me take you on an experience..

I first ‘discovered’ the practise of meditation in June 2018, when I saw someone had posted a picture on their instagam story of their daily streak of their meditations using the app Headspace. I kind of had no idea what meditation really was, and my awareness and thoughts surrounding it was merely that it was some strange woowoo (not sim sex) thing that tall surfer hippies did.

Anyway.. In August 2018, I was on holiday in Greece sat on my balcony after a day of becoming the human equivalent of a squashie and eating too much crusty white bread smothered in alioli, and I downloaded the headspace app and did 3 minutes of guided meditation.

It was a bit boring, and didn’t particularly feel any tangible ‘benefit’, so thought well that wasn’t worth the hype, deleted the app and went back inside to lather myself in aftersun.

MISTAKE NO.1 — EXPECTING TO FEEL SOME LIFE CHANGING BENEFIT

There’s many reasons why this is not a good idea.

Firstly; the benefits seen from meditating are not instant. Sure, directly afterwards once you’ve gotten a bit better, you may feel a relief of stress due to a reduction in blood pressure and increased PNS activity. However, the long term…
